Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) was established on January 1, 1992, by Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum as a state-owned public service infrastructure company. The primary goal of DEWA is to deliver a reliable and suitable service to the residents of Dubai.

By the end of 2019, DEWA boasted a workforce of 11,727 employees, providing electricity to 915,623 customers and water to 816,580 customers. In the same year, DEWA demonstrated an electricity capacity of 11,400 MW and desalinated 470 million imperial gallons of water daily.

DEWA’s commitment to sustainable practices is evident in its transition from conventional gas-fired power plants to the innovative 5GW Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This solar park has set numerous cost records for both photovoltaic and concentrated solar power. The project began with an initial 13 MW (DC) solar plant in 2013, followed by a contracted 200 MW (AC) second phase with developer ACWA Power in January 2015. The third phase, an 800 MW PV power plant, commenced in the fall of 2015 and is anticipated to conclude by 2020. Additionally, DEWA has outlined plans for a 250 MW pumped storage hydroelectricity project at Hatta, utilizing 880 million gallons of water situated above 300 meters.
